Glasgow: Govan
THE SEAT TO WATCH
Glasgow: Govan
Twice the scene of Nationalist triumph, with by-election wins, Govan has also been the scene of disappointment. For a party that has failed to establish itself with representation in west central Scotland, it is a symbol of both hope and frustration.

Central: Falkirk West
THE SEAT TO WATCH
falkirk West
DENNIS Canavan's humiliation of Labour, after it had deemed him not good enough to represent Falkirk West, is the stuff of political legend.

Highlands & Islands: Western Isles
THE SEAT TO WATCH
Highlands: Western Isles
PERHAPS the hardest-fought marginal seat in the country, it is also one of the most peculiar, with a small electorate who can expect to eyeball the candidates and are more likely to be swayed by personality than policy, with the "foolishness" of Angus MacNeil a possible factor in the outcome.

Lothian: Edinburgh Central
THE SEAT TO WATCH
Lothians: Edinburgh Central
The capital’s city centre has only a small amount of the prosperous New Town, and lots of unpredictable student votes south of the Old Town. It includes poorer estates such as Dumbiedykes and, of course, the Scottish Parliament itself.

West of Scotland: Strathkelvin and Bearsden
THE SEAT TO WATCH
West of Scotland: Strathkelvin and Bearsden
The biggest turnover at the 2003 election was when Labour was beaten by Jean Turner, a retired GP campaigning to save services at Stobhill Hospital. Strathkelvin and Bearsden had been Tory until Sam Galbraith won and built up one of the biggest majorities in Scotland, being more than 16,000 votes clear in 1997, and securing half the vote in 1999.

South of Scotland: Ettrick, Tweeddale and Lauderdale
THE SEAT TO WATCH
South of Scotland: Ettrick, Tweeddale and Lauderdale
Ettrick, Tweeddale and Lauderdale ought to be safe Liberal Democrat territory, having been represented by David Steel from 1965. Yet it has become Scotland’s only four-way marginal.

North East Scotland: Gordon
THE SEAT TO WATCH
North East Scotland: Gordon
Nora Radcliffe is not the most combative of LibDems, but the Gordon MSP is going to have to go some to avoid being steam-rollered by the Alex Salmond phenomenon.
spacer
Mid Scotland & Fife: Ochil
THE SEAT TO WATCH
Mid Scotland & Fife: Ochil
From Clackmannanshire through parts of Stirlingshire and into Kinross-shire, from leafy commuter belt and university campus to mining villages with politics rooted in red-blooded Communism, Ochil has become one of the most intriguing seats in Scotland.
