ANGUS

ANGUS is SNP heartland with support coming throughout the small town and farming communities, including Montrose, Arbroath, Kirriemuir, Forfar, and Carnoustie.

The SNP secured its 17 seats in 2003 with 40% of the vote, followed by the Independents with 19%. The Liberal Democrats won two more seats than Labour, although they polled 0.4% less. The Conservative share was 11.8%.

From May, there will be 29 councillors from eight wards. Ten of the present councillors are retiring, including Independent George Norrie after 41 years in local government. The key issues are rural housing, education, and economic development.
