ARGYLL & BUTE

IT is almost impossible to predict with confidence who might be running this council after the elections, because its most unlikely political bedfellows have already woken up next to each other in the past.

A group of Independent councillors formed an administration from 1996 until 1999. Then a working alliance of LibDem, SNP, Labour, Tory and Independent councillors took over in 1999. That lasted until 2001, when by-election victories allowed the Independents led by Allan Macaskill to form another administration which continued in power until 2007.

He is standing down from the council, as are a third of councillors, so change is on the way.
