Margo MacDonald in presiding role offer
By ROBBIE DINWOODIE, Chief Scottish Political Correspondent

The chances of Margo MacDonald becoming Presiding Officer when George Reid steps down next week became increasingly likely yesterday.

With all the parties unwilling to sacrifice a vote by allowing one of their number to take the post, Margo MacDonald's suggestion that she do it for a year could now be taken up.

Ms MacDonald said: "If I can help them get out of the fix I would be prepared to serve and proud to do so."

Tory leader Annabel Goldie rejected standing for the post and closed another option yesterday when she appointed David McLetchie to the business bureau.

The bureau is central to the parliament, and will be a key battleground when the SNP attempts to form a minority government.

The LibDems will have hardliner Tavish Scott on the committee, while Bruce Crawford is likely to be asked to be Minister for Parliament, shaping up to be one of the toughest jobs in the new administration.

Meanwhile Jack McConnell moved swiftly yesterday to exert his influence on the business bureau, appointing one his key aides, Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson.
