| News Labour MP and CPA candidate reported John Robertson, Labour MP for Anniesland, has been reported to the procurator-fiscal following ugly scenes which marred Glasgow's election counts. The 55-year-old politician was involved in a confrontation as Labour's successful candidates endured heckling from the floor of the city's SECC. Mr Robertson was seen in a heated exchange with Harris Mohammad, son of Abdul Dean, a candidate for the Christian People's Alliance party in Scotland. Officers from Strathclyde Police were seen surrounding Mr Robertson and Mr Mohammad as they had an exchange of views. The pair were later separated and statements were taken. At the time, Mr Dean told The Herald the CPA, which alleged one of its supporters had been shoved during Glasgow Anniesland MSP Bill Butler's victory speech, hoped to take further action. Mr Dean, 44, however, is also believed to have been reported to the procurator-fiscal for his part in the incident. During the hostilities, George Black, the returning officer, appealed for courtesy, even threatening to clear the hall if the difficulties persisted. Mr Butler was loudly abused as he spoke on stage, and he accused SNP supporters of "making a mockery of your candidate's positive campaign". Later in the morning, Margaret Curran, who held on to her Glasgow Baillieston seat, was also heckled. Last night Mr Robertson declined to comment on the incident, and refused to be drawn on his account of the apparent row. Neither Mr Dean nor Theresa Smith, chair of the Christian People's Alliance party in Scotland, were available for comment yesterday. A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police confirmed that following a "minor incident" at the SECC in the early hours of yesterday morning, a 55-year-old man and a 44-year-old man had been reported to the procurator-fiscal. 12:01am Saturday 5th May 2007 |
