| 60 Second briefing The Parties - April 3 SNPAlex Salmond was in Falkirk, highlighting plans to abolish the council tax, and the benefit that could bring pensioners. The party also went on the attack over Gordon Brown's pensions tax cut 10 years ago.
LABOURThe party attacked the SNP over its plans for a "neverendum", citing Alex Salmond's admission that a "no" vote in an independence referendum in 2010 would not be the end of the matter. It also picked up warnings from property experts that independence could cause a price crash. Jack McConnell offered to double the size of the small business rates relief scheme, as he visited Glasgow and Paisley. Actor Brian Cox voiced an election broadcast swathed in saltire flags and Scotland football shirts.
LIBDEMSNicol Stephen was in Dunfermline with Willie Rennie, the MP who won last year's Westminster by-election in the Fife burgh. They visited the high street, which became a major local issue in last year's campaign as small shops struggle to compete with supermarkets. There was also a promise to increase sentences for knife crime.
OTHERSThe UK Independence Party launched its manifesto, with a proposal to wind up most of the Scottish Parliament's activities. Representatives would also sit at Westminster and would meet in Edinburgh part-time only. Solidarity's Tommy Sheridan said ministers at Holyrood and Westminster should be paying tax on chauffeured cars. The Scottish Christian Party complained to Strathclyde Police about alleged poster sabotage by its rivals.3:57pm Tuesday 3rd April 2007 |
